The Income Tax Department issues the Tax Deduction Account Number or the Tax Collection Account Number. In order to obtain TAN, each person is liable to deduct tax at source or to collect tax at source whereas PAN i.e, Permanent Account Number is an unique identification number assigned to all taxpayers in India. It is issued in order to prevent tax evasion by individuals and entities as it links with all financial transactions made by particular individual or entity. Both are distinctive 10-character alpha numeric number assigned by the Income Tax Department (ITD) of India.
The online TAN assignment application can be made via the NSDL-TIN website. All required information and details must be correctly entered along with the communication address and email ID. The PAN number must be indicated on the application. If the deductor has an old format tax deduction / collection account number, the same must be indicated in the required field.
The government fees for TAN application are INR 63.00+tax. One may pay by Demand Draft, Credit Card, Debit Card or Cheque.
Upon submission of the TAN application and payment of processing fees, a 14-digit acknowledgement number would be received.
Acknowledgement includes the applicant's status, the applicant's name, contact details (address, email ID and contact number) and payment details. When the TAN number is assigned, the intimation will be sent to the applicant by NSDL.

First three alphabets: Represents the city.
Fourth alphabet: Initial name of the TAN holder.
Next Five Characters- System generated numeric numbers.
Last character- Alphabetic Number which is also known as check digit and it is system generated.
All Indian citizens with a source of income and valid proof (as prescribed by the Income Tax Department) are eligible to apply for a PAN card.
